ARTIST STATEMENT

Ceramics is my creative outlet. This class helps me to relieve stress and get through my academically rigorous schedule. My goal is to create inspiring artwork that makes people happy. I work with clay because I enjoy constructing pieces that are interesting from all angles.

I begin all of my projects by brainstorming ideas, and sketching as many options as I can think of. When my ideas don't translate well onto clay, I make changes and find the best solution to my problems. I work very slowly and focus on small details. My work is typically not finished until I can no longer work on the project anymore. Most of my pieces have bright colors and relate to nature. I usually work with under glazes because I have more freedom to create colors. For functional pieces I use porcelain clay, but I prefer using studio clay. My best artwork always include some aspect of the outdoors.

For the most part, my current work has shifted away from the plant aspect of nature. I have explored new concepts, such as outer space, and man-made structures. I am exploring new colors and methods of construction. I work with larger pieces of clay. Although I still use under glaze, I experiment with the glazes' reaction during high firing.
